Cow drowned into the sea for being impregnated by human
Cow drowned into the sea for being impregnated by human
Villagers from Julah in Tejakula, Buleleng, tow (see photo) a pregnantcow behind a boat into open sea as part of a local traditional ritual.
The cow, which is five months pregnant, was thrown out to the sea about3 kilometers from land Monday. The villagers believe the animal wasimpregnated by a village elder.
During the ritual the man, who was caught red-handed having sexualintercourse with the cow two months ago, joined the boat trip in orderto throw away his clothes to to symbolize him discarding his sins.
Julah customary village head Ketut Sidemen said the ritual, calledgamya gamana, or freak weeding, and had been conducted there forgenerations. The decision to perform the ritual was made a localresidents meeting.
In line with customary regulations, the perpetrator, identified only asPS, 70, was sanctioned to fund the expensive ceremony, which aimed tocleanse him of any bad influences.
Luh Ketut Suryani, a professor and activist, deplored the sancation against PS.
She said drowning a cow was baseless because sexual intercourse betweena human being and am animal could not cause pregnancy due to thedifferent chromosomes and genes of the two.
"The cow is not guilty, why shoud it be drowned? Why don't just use a symbol like what was done by the perpetrator?" she said.
Suryani's said she was concerned dealt with the financial situation of the owner, who lives below the poverty line.
"The cow, which has a high price, had to be thrown away. It will be apity for the owner, who is already poor and is now forced to lose hispriceless belonging." -- JP/Alit Kertaraharja

Astro Stop Service in Indonesia
INDONESIA: Astro stops services in Indonesia
Local cable operator Direct Vision apologizes for the Malaysian-based broadcasting company's termination of service
The Jakarta Post
Monday, October 20, 2008
The Malaysian-based Astro All Asia Network broadcasting company terminated services to its customers via PT Direct Vision as of last night.
Customer A. Raharjo told tempointeraktif.com that he knew service was being terminated from the news but he had not believed it as there had been no official notification from Direct Vision, a company under the Lippo Group via PT First Media.
"Last night even local channels such as Metro TV and SCTV suddenly disappeared. Astro's channels, for example Awani, were no more there," he said.
Visitors to Astro's local website, www.astro.co.id are redirected to www.directvisiontv.com, where the management of Direct Vision apologizes to its customers for the termination of service "until further notice". It promises to reimburse its customers who have paid in advance for any undelivered services.
Halim Mahfudz of Direct Vision said Monday the company had 98,000 customers. Out of that number, only 36,000 had paid in advance.
Last month, Astro decided to not renew its contract with Direct Vision which is 49 percent owned by the Lippo Group unit after allegations that the latter had failed to pay a $245 million bill, which Astro had spent in Indonesia.
According to recent Malaysian media reports, the breakup of Astro's joint venture is the latest in a series of business rows between Lippo Group (with James Riady at the helm) and the Malaysian business group controlled by the high-profile tycoon Ananda Krishnan.
The two conglomerates were previously engaged in a property business in Singapore and a mobile telecommunications business in Indonesia.

Astro finally pulls plug on Indonesia service
by Asiya Bakht 21-Oct-08, 16:09
JAKARTA - Malaysian pay-TV operator Astro has discontinued the provision of all services to its Indonesian partner, Lippo Group subsidiary Direct Vision (DV).
The situation is believed to be a result of a much-publicised dispute between tycoons Anand Krishna and James Riady, who head Astro and Lippo, respectively.
In August, Astro announced its decision not to renew its contract with DV, which lapsed on August 20. However, the Malaysia company has decided to extend its service agreement on two occasions, first until 30 September and then until 19 October. It had also allowed DV to use the ‘Astro’ name under the trademark licence agreement, on the condition that DV settles its outstanding payments to Astro.
Astro now says that as no payments have been received from DV, its board of directors have decided to cease all support and services and to terminate the trademark licence agreement.
“Astro has supported PT DV since February 2006 in the belief that arrangements that would have allowed it to invest in PT DV would be concluded,” said Astro legal counsel Todung Mulya Lubis. “But since it has been more than two years and there is no indication that any such arrangements will be concluded or that Astro will be paid for the support and services that it has provided, its Board has determined that it has no option but to terminate its support to PT DV.”
Until now, Astro was providing broadcasting services, information technology services, satellite reception equipment leasing and channel supply services to Direct Vision.
According to Todung, Astro has not been compensated for Rp 2.5 trillion (US$ 250 million) worth of support and services given to DV.“This situation has arisen purely as a result of a commercial dispute between Astro and Lippo Group in relation to the non conclusion of the proposed joint venture between the parties in PT DV.”

Nurul Huda's Murder And Rape case
NURUL HUDA'S MURDER AND RAPE CASE: Mohd Abbas escapes gallows
PUTRAJAYA, WED:
A former security guard, Mohd Abbas Danus Baksan, who was found guilty of murdering 10-year-old Nurul Huda Abdul Ghani in Johor four years ago escaped the gallows after the Federal Court here today set aside the conviction and sentence.
The court, however, upheld the 20 years jail and 24 strokes of the rotan imposed by the Johor Baru Sessions Court for raping the girl, to which he had pleaded guilty. But he escapes the caning because he is now 52 years old.
In allowing Mohd Abbas's appeal, Court of Appeal President Tan Sri Zaki Tun Azmi said he agreed with the defence submission that there was a third person involved in the case.
"Therefore all the circumstantial evidence adduced by the prosecution does not irresistibly point to the guilt of the appellant (Mohd Abbas)," he said in reversing the decisions of the Court of Appeal and the High Court.
Sitting together with Justice Zaki were Chief Judge of Malaya Tan Sri Alauddin Mohd Sheriff and Federal Court Judge Datuk Aziz Mohamad.
Mohd Abbas looked stunned after the court interpreter explained the decision to him.
The Johor Baru High Court on Aug 27, 2004, found him guilty of murdering 10-year-old Nurul Huda at the security booth of Tenaga Nasional Berhad's main sub-station in Kampung Pekajang, Tanjung Kupang, Johor Baru between 9.20am and 1pm on Jan 17, 2004.
He was also sentenced to 20 years jail and 24 strokes of the rotan by the Johor Baru Sessions Court on Jan 26, 2004, after he pleaded guilty to raping her.
Nurul Huda's naked body was found in the toilet of the security booth. She had earlier gone to a shop about 500 metres from her house to buy some groceries.
Mohd Abbas sought redress from the Federal Court after the Court of Appeal dismissed his appeal against the conviction and sentences on July 3, 2006.
Yesterday Mohd Abbas' counsel, Jagdish Kaur, submitted that there was a third person involved in the case and Mohd Abbas in his evidence had said that he and two other men by the name of Suyaimi Mohd Zin and "Jojo" had raped the girl.
She said that in the original charge at the Magistrate's Court, it was stated that Mohd Abbas committed the offence with two other men but after the case brought up to the High Court only Mohd Abbas' name was mentioned.
Today deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Hanafiah Zakaria submitted that the evidence was clear that Mohd Abbas had murdered Nurul Huda as he as the only one working at the security booth and his refusal to allow the police and Nurul Huda's brother to enter the booth to investigate showed that he was hiding something.
He said the fact that Suyaimi or any other person was not charged together with Mohd Abbas indicated that the prosecution did not have any evidence against them.
Zaki said there were many missing gaps in the prosecution's case and the prosecution's investigation was also incomplete.
"It is the prosecution's burden to prove the murder. The defence's job is to create the doubt," he said.
Here is the beginning of my post. And here is the rest of it.

Probe into sex video clips
By R.S.N. MURALI
KUALA TERENGGANU: The emergence of three video clips featuring secondary school students engaging in extreme sexual acts will be investigated thoroughly, Deputy Education Minister Datuk Razali Ismail promised.
The clips depicting students in uniforms performing sexual acts were widely distributed via the handphone multimedia service (MMS) and video compact discs (VCDS) to schoolchildren. The video clips were said to be “a hot” item in rural areas here.
An annoyed Razali promised that his officers would go all out to nab the culprit(s) behind the smut.
“We will also investigate how these acts were recorded via videophones inside school premises as students are barred from carrying handphones during classes.
“Our officers have initiated a probe into three other pornographic clips involving students, two showing students involved in sexual acts believed to have originated from Bintulu, Sarawak and another from Pekan, Pahang.
“The officers will be directed to widen their investigations into these latest sexual material,” he said yesterday.
Razali said he would personally see that the probe was expedited in his capacity as chairman of the national student disciplinary committee.
“We will rope in parent-teacher associations (PTAs) and the students disciplinary committee to assist in the investigation,” he said.
“The outcome of the investigation will be referred to the police,” he added.
Razali said he viewed these sexual acts performed by students as “a grave illness’’ that should be contained at once. However, he also did not discount the possibility of outsiders impersonating as students to film the sexual acts as clips depicting schoolchildren were highly sought after.
The two videos showed students having sex in classrooms and one in an area that resembles a science lab. In one of the clip, the students can be heard conversing in thick Kelantanese dialect while the female student wearing a headscarf had a name tag on a pinafore.
In the second clip, a male student is seen performing the act in what is believed to be outside a school as the emblem of a school on the background could be seen. The school is believed to be located in a rural area here.

Malaysia IPT not in 200 rank THES-QS University Ranking
The new list published today is no different with online users flocking its official website for the latest, 2008/2009 ranking. In the latest table, the usual suspects, led by Harvard, Yale, Cambridge, Oxford and Caltech are in the top 5 charge. Harvard, in particular, has been topping the THES-QS University Ranking for its 5th time in a row. It also does not come as a surprise to see the top ten are all occupied by universities from the United States and United Kingdom.
Top ten ranking (the bracket denotes the previous year's position):
1. Harvard University, US (1)
2. Yale University, US (2)
3. Cambridge University, UK (=2)
4. Oxford University, UK (=2)
5. California Institute of Technology, Caltech, US (=7)
6. Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, UK (5)
7. University College London, UCL, UK (9)
8. University of Chicago, US (=7)
9. Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MIT, US (10)
10. Columbia University, US (11)
However, this year's table saw the British universities losing their grip with its flagship universities Oxford and Cambridge dropping their place from joint second place last year. Overall, only 17 universities from the UK made it to the top 100 this year, compared to 19 previously.
Additionally, Australia (Australian National University), Japan (Tokyo and Kyoto universities), Canada (McGill), Switzerland (ETH Zurich), Hong Kong (HK University), France (Ecole) and Singapore (National University of Singapore) have representatives in the top 30. Other surprise entry also includes the Chulalongkorn University of Thailand, which has shown progression in climbing up from its previous rank of 223 to 166.
Despite recently been praised by the UNESCO for its effort in improving the national education, Malaysia continues to lose out from the race with its main universities, Universiti Malaya (UM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Universiti Sains Malaysia, which recently attained the Apex University status, are nowhere to be seen in the top 200 list.

‘I am not to blame for PM’s exit’ - Khairy Jamaluddin
‘I am not to blame for PM’s exit’
PETALING JAYA: Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin has denied that he is to blame for the early exit of his father-in-law Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi as Prime Minister.
He said since the beginning of Abdullah’s premiership, the party leadership had been a “victim of constant and concerted demonisation.” This demonisation took on a very personal tone. It was directed at a few individuals.
“A lot of it was negative perception building. I think it was a deliberate strategy to undermine the leadership,” he said yesterday when met by reporters at the launch of the Institute for Advance Islamic Studies.
Over the years, there have been criticism and scathing attacks against Khairy by a number of people, including former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
They alleged that the Prime Minister was allowing his 32-year-old son-in-law to interfere in the running of the Government, which both Abdullah and Khairy have denied.
Khairy said Abdullah’s decision to leave office in March should be recognised as a sacrifice for party unity.
He added that a change in Umno and the country’s leadership would not reclaim lost support if there was no commitment to the reforms the Prime Minister had started.
“The reason we did not do well in the last election was not because of the leadership but because we did not fulfil the promises of 2004,” he said.
Khairy said Umno should not be under any misplaced illusion that it was a leadership issue.
Khairy, who is aspiring for the Youth chief post in the March party elections, said he hoped his father-in-law’s leaving office would not affect his chances in the contest.
In Alor Star, Jerlun MP Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir called on candidates vying for positions in Barisan Nasional component parties to stop bashing Umno.
“Umno candidates have been careful not to harp on sensitive subjects that could damage the relationship between the component parties,” he said.
“Likewise, candidates from other component parties should do the same. They should not fan sentiments to gain popularity within their own party at the expense of other component parties,” he said.

Lyrics So What - Pink
Na Na Na Na Na Na Na
Na Na Na Na Na Na
Na Na Na Na Na Na Na
Na Na Na Na Na Na
I guess I just lost my husband
I don't know where he went
So I'm gonna drink my money
I'm not gonna pay his rent (Nope)
I got a brand new attitude
And I'm gonna wear it tonight
I wanna get in trouble
I wanna start a fight
Na Na Na Na Na Na Na
I wanna start a fight
Na Na Na Na Na Na Na
I wanna start a fight
So, so what?
I'm still a rock star
I got my rock moves
And i don't need you
And guess what
I'm having more fun
And now that we're done
I'm gonna show you tonight
I'm alright, I'm just fine
And you're a tool
So, so what?
I am a rockstar
I got my rock moves
And I don't want you tonight
Uh, check my flow, uh
The waiter just took my table
And gave to Jessica Simp- Shit!
I guess I'll go sit with drum boy
At least he'll know how to hit
What if this song's on the radio
Then somebody's gonna die
I'm gonna get in trouble
My ex will start a fight
Na Na Na Na Na Na Na
He's gonna start a fight
Na Na Na Na Na Na Na
We're all gonna get in a fight
So, so what?
I'm still a rock star
I got my rock moves
And I don't need you
And guess what
I'm having more fun
And now that we're done
I'm gonna show you tonight
I'm alright, I'm just fine
And you're a tool
So, so what?
I am a rock star
I got my rock moves
And I don't want you tonight
You weren't there, you never were
You weren't all, but thats not fair
I gave you life, I gave my all
You weren't there, you let me fall
So, so what?
I'm still a rock star
I got my rock moves
And I don't need you
And guess what
I'm having more fun
And now that we're done (we're done)
I'm gonna show you tonight
I'm alright(I'm alright)
I'm just fine (I'm just fine)

And you're a tool

Pak Lah will not defend his UMNO President’s post.
PM will not defend Umno post (updated)
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi will not defend his Umno presidency in the party polls next March, paving the way for his deputy Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
He told this to reporters after a Barisan Nasional Supreme Council meeting at the Putra World Trade Centre here on Wednesday.
Abdullah also told reporters that he would “stay on as Prime Minister” till March.
By tradition, the Umno president and deputy president become the prime minister and deputy prime minister respectively. Najib is expected to run for president, and if he wins, would become the nation’s sixth prime minister.
With his now all eyes will focus on who will contest for the Presidents and Deputy Presidents Posts. Let not loose sight that Pak Lah may be stepping down but Khairi - the person who I give most credit to for Pak Lah’s downfall will be running for the UMNO youth position.
With Datuk Nur Jazlan upping the ante and announcing his intention to go for a Party Vice President position, I am sure we are going to see more new faces popping up. That is good of UMNO as it really needs to show its ability to reform and a huge part of it is to put new untainted faces into leadership.

Jealous hubby kills wife and self
By MUGUNTAN VANAR
KOTA KINABALU: A husband, who suspected that his wife was unfaithful, blew her and himself up with a fish bomb in a house to the horror of their 13 children.
The children were ordered to leave the house at Kampung Cederamata II at about 9am
yesterday before the blast and they were not injured, but the woman’s niece who was in the kitchen sustained facial injuries.
Police said the couple had been quarrelling for the past month and the woman had left their home to live with her sister in nearby Likas about a month ago after threatening to divorce her husband.
The man had gone to persuade his wife to return home and asked all their children aged between three and 20 to leave the house.
In grief: An unidentified son of the couple consoling his sister in Kota Kinabalu Monday.
He was heard shouting at her when suddenly there was a loud explosion.
Kota Kinabalu City deputy police chief Supt Rowell Marong identified the man as Babin Isang, 35, and his wife as Indak Musa, 35, who were both Filipino refugees living in Sabah under the Immigration stay pass IMM13.
He said police were investigating the case as sudden death report.
He said both Babin, who was self employed, and his wife were killed on the spot. They sustained injuries to their abdomen and their bodies have been sent for post mortems.
